Welcome. piotr1c

Welcome to my psychotherapy and counselling website:

"Therapy is an investigation of how we function in the world,
and how we can function more in tune with our nature…"

My name is Piotr Mierkowski.

I am a psychotherapist, senior counselling practitioner, supervisor and trainer with over 25 years of clinical experience in central London. I am registered with United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) and an accredited member of British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).

My therapeutic work is with adults and couples. I offer psychotherapy and counselling in my private practice in North London, N19 - borders of Islington and Highgate, walking distance from Archway and Upper Holloway stations. I offer a safe and confidential space to explore whatever the clients' issues.

My roots are in psychology and neurosciences, which I studied in Poland - country of my childhood. After moving to the UK in the late 1980s, I trained at The Gestalt Centre London. I hold MA in Gestalt Psychotherapy from London Metropolitan University, as well as Diploma in Counselling, and Diploma in Health Psychology from Middlesex University. I have considerable training in integrative body therapy from Chiron Centre, and trained extensively in couples therapy with Joseph Zinker, Bob & Rita Resnick of GATLA - Gestalt Associates Training Los Angeles, Rich Hycner, and Judith Hemming from the Centre for Systemic Constellations as well as the Tavistock Centre for Couple Relationships (TCCR).

In addition to my psychotherapy qualifications, I hold Diploma in Relational Supervision and offer clinical supervision across a range of therapeutic modalities. Over the years, I have also facilitated numerous training workshops and personal development groups in the UK and abroad.

My approach is gestalt therapy.

Gestalt therapy is a creative attitude towards life and personal growth with the emphasis on present experience, contact and awareness that addresses the whole person: mind/body/emotion/spirit.

My clinical practice has been guided by the idea of psychotherapy as expressed by Joel Latner in the opening quote on this page. This American gestalt therapist, who sadly passed away earlier this year, stated that Gestalt therapy is built upon two central ideas: focus on the experiential present moment and on the therapeutic relationship - "as it is only possible to know ourselves at any given time against the background of our relationships to others".

Acceptance of each person in their unique reality is inherent in my practice. Over the years, I have acquired experience of working effectively with people from diverse cultures, race, social backgrounds, gender and sexualities. I work in collaboration with my clients to increase awareness of their strengths as well as identifying and understanding blocks to change, growth and fulfilling relationships.

I work regularly with visual and performing artists - actors, dancers, musicians, writers and designers. Some of my clients face existential concerns and search for meaning in their lives, explore their place in the world and their identity; all want to find new, creative and more satisfying ways of self-expression.

My clients include individuals who are seeking safe and confidential space to clarify and explore more specific issues, like: relationship difficulties, depression, anger, bereavement and loss, anxiety, early trauma and abuse, sexual concerns and compulsive behaviour, work related stress, identity crisis.

I have considerable experience in providing counselling and psychotherapy to individuals with enduring mental health difficulties and those seeking help on the advice of their GP or psychiatrist for debilitating complaints, including anxiety states, depressive illness, psychosomatic and stress related symptoms.

I offer brief therapy when appropriate but I tend to work longer term to facilitate deep and lasting change. Clients can choose to see me for psychotherapy and counselling on the open-ended basis or book a set number of sessions. I work primarily in English but sessions can also be held in Polish.

If you wish to book an initial appointment, contact me by phone 020 7281 5409 or on my mobile 07779 506 412 - please leave me a message and I will call you back.

You can also contact me by email at All messages and correspondence will be treated in the strictest confidence.
