Welcome to my psychotherapy and counselling website:

"Therapy is an investigation of how we function in the world,
and how we can function more in tune with our nature…"

My name is Piotr Mierkowski.

I am a psychotherapist, senior counselling practitioner, and supervisor with over 20 years of clinical experience in private practice, NHS and voluntary sector. Until recently, I was a non-executive Director of the Gestalt Centre London. I am an accredited member of British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and registered with United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP).

My therapeutic work is with adults, couples and groups. I offer psychotherapy and counselling in my private practice in North London, N19 - borders of Islington and Highgate, walking distance from Archway and Upper Holloway stations. I offer a safe and confidential space to explore whatever the clients' issues.

I also offer couples therapy together with a female co-therapist in Camden (NW1). This particular approach is suitable for couples with longstanding difficulties in their relationship who want to explore how problems have arisen and what interferes with changing them. We work with couples whatever their sexual orientation. To find out more about this form of couples therapy visit the Gestalt Practice.

My roots are in psychology and neuroscience, which I studied in Poland, where I was born. I trained as a psychotherapist in the UK, in The Gestalt Centre London. I hold MA in Gestalt Psychotherapy from London Metropolitan University, Diploma in Counselling and Diploma in Health Psychology.

In addition to my psychotherapy and counselling qualifications, I hold Diploma in Relational Supervision and offer clinical supervision across a range of therapeutic modalities. I facilitate personal and professional development workshops and groups for counsellors and psychotherapists in the UK and abroad.

My approach is gestalt therapy.

Gestalt therapy is a creative attitude towards life and personal growth with the emphasis on present experience, contact and awareness that addresses the whole person: mind/body/emotion/spirit.

Acceptance of each person in their unique reality is inherent in my practice. Over the years, I have acquired experience of working effectively with people from diverse cultures, race, social backgrounds, gender and sexualities. I work in collaboration with my clients to increase awareness of their strengths as well as identifying and understanding blocks to change, growth and fulfilling relationships.

I work regularly with visual and performing artists - actors, dancers, musicians, writers and designers. Some of my clients face existential concerns and search for meaning in their lives, explore their place in the world and their identity; all want to find new, creative and more satisfying ways of self-expression.

My clients include individuals who are seeking safe and confidential space to clarify and explore more specific issues, like: relationship difficulties, depression, anger, bereavement and loss, anxiety, early trauma and abuse, sexual concerns and compulsive behaviour, work related stress, panic attacks.

I have considerable experience in providing counselling and psychotherapy to individuals with enduring mental health difficulties and those seeking help on the advice of their GP or psychiatrist for debilitating complaints, including anxiety states, depressive illness, psychosomatic and stress related symptoms.

I offer brief therapy when appropriate but I tend to work longer term to facilitate deep and lasting change. Clients can choose to see me for psychotherapy and counselling on the open-ended basis or book a set number of sessions. I work primarily in English but sessions can also be held in Polish.

If you wish to book an initial appointment, contact me by phone 020 7281 5409 or on my mobile 07779 506 412 - please leave me a message and I will call you back.

You can also contact me by email at All messages and correspondence will be treated in the strictest confidence.

If you are interested in reading more about Gestalt Therapy, I have provided here links to the articles written by two eminent gestalt therapists: Malcolm Parlett - founder of GPTI and British Gestalt Journal, and Gary Yontef - an American psychotherapist from Pacific Gestalt Institute in Los Angeles who originally trained with the founder of Gestalt Therapy, Fritz Perls. You can also contact me directly.
